The Games for Change Student Challenge

G4C Learn’s flagship program, the G4C Student Challenge, is an international game design competition inviting young people (ages 10 - 25) to create digital games inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The program uses youth interest in video games to empower them as change-makers and develop their future-ready skills including coding, digital design, collaboration, communication, problem solving, and systems thinking. The Student Challenge amplifies student voices, invites young people to imagine creative solutions to global problems, and enables them to see themselves as engaged citizens and changemakers.

About the Program

Since its launch in 2015, the Student Challenge provides professional development in game-based learning for educators, curriculum guides to open-source game-making platforms, in-school and after-school game-making courses, student game jams, mentorship and workshops led by game industry experts, and deep exploration into social impact themes with multimedia content provided by social impact focused partners. The program culminates in a game design competition through which students submit their original impact games and compete for prizes such as scholarships, technology, industry-related opportunities, and national recognition.

This Year’s Themes

Outgrow Hunger.

Theme 1: Outgrow Hunger

Design a game where players care for a natural space that feeds and supports a community. Whether it’s planting crops, protecting pollinators, or sharing food, players will take actions that show how community green spaces help fight hunger and build resilience. The game should highlight how local environments connect to global food systems and how small actions can make a big impact. Inspire players to explore, protect, and grow their world.

Own the Road

Theme 2: Own the Road

Design a game that inspires safer behavior in and around vehicles and reduces the risks of being on the road. Whether you’re taking the perspective of a city planner, a driver, a pedestrian, a biker, or even a car manufacturer, your game should educate, engage, and empower players to make smart, life-saving choices on the road.
Theme 2: Own the Road
All in for Nature: Reefs & Rainforests.

Theme 3: All in for Nature: Reefs & Rainforests

What if your game could make someone feel the wonder of a reef or hear the heartbeat of a rainforest? Design a game that tells the story of a reef or rainforest under threat, and how people unite to protect it.
